Monthly Media update launched

Amplifying her statement during the Launch of the Monthly Media Update on 19th February 2010, Information and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister Angela Cifire observed that information dissemination plays a critical role in national development hence the need for increased media coverage on water supply and sanitation issues.

EFFICIENCY GAINS RECORDED IN THE WATER SECTOR

The National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) has recorded efficiency gains in the water sector among four Commercial utilities during the last six months. The gains recorded are expansion of water coverage, increase in hours of water supply and access to sanitation as well as an increase in metering aimed at reducing water losses. To this effect K1.4 Billion has been disbursed and will be shared among the four Utilities namely Kafubu, North-Western, Chambeshi, and Southern Water and Sewerage Companies for meeting specific targets set in July last year.

Energy Minister implores newly appointed Council to tackle “Unaccounted For Water” and Tariffs

Energy and Water Development Minister Kenneth Konga, has challenged the newly appointed council to address the issues of “high unaccounted for water” and Water Tariffs. Speaking in Lusaka during the inauguration of the 4th NWASCO council, Mr. Konga noted that “high unaccounted for water” in the country, is adversely impacting on water resources and sustainability of service provision.

NWWSC SCOOPS BEST PRIZE AS NWASCO LAUNCHES 2008/9 SECTOR REPORT

This is according to the latest Urban and Peri-Urban water supply and sanitation sector report which highlights the comparative performance of all commercial utilities in the country and published by NWASCO.

Innovation inevitable in the water sector

Chief Executive Officers for Commercial Utilities (CUs) in Zambia recently met in Lusaka at a forum organized by NWASCO to discuss innovations in the water sector. Speaking at the meeting NWASCO Board chairman Cosmas Musumali emphasized the need for innovation and hard work especially in billing and collection. Dr Musumali implored CUs to devise systems that are effective in billing customers and collecting water and sanitation fees.

NWASCO awards K900 billion for improved performance to three CUs

The National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) has disbursed K900 million to three commercial utilities under its Regulation by Incentive (RBI) program. The three commercial utilities rewarded are North-Western Water and Sewerage Company, Chambeshi Water and Sewerage Company, and Southern Water and Sewerage Company. North Western Water and Sewerage Company has received K285, 531,310.00, while Chambeshi and Southern Water and Sewerage companies have been awarded K 161,325,536.00 and K464, 420,000.00 respectively.

Celebrating World Water Day

22nd March marks the annual commemoration of World Water Day. This year’s theme ‘Shared Waters-Shared Opportunities’ calls attention to the waters that cross borders and link us together, that is...transboundary waters. As the national regulator for water supply and sanitation in Zambia, NWASCO never fails to participate in such cardinal events. Though 22nd March is the official day designated for the commemoration of World Water Day, Zambia held its commemorative activities on Friday 20th March in view of the day falling on a Sunday.

Sharing the Consumer Experience

The plight of the poor is typically assumed to be at the back of the queue for access to clean water and sanitation. The Lusaka Consumer Watch Group had a privilege to participate at the recent and just ended world water week in Stockholm. The purpose of participation at this conference was to share the Zambian experience especially in the area of bringing on board the Voice of the Consumer in the water sector.

Copperbelt CUs New Institutional Arrangement
