NWASCO DATES LUSAKA RESIDENTS
NWASCO held its open day at the Arcades Shopping Mall underneath the shade in the walk path leading to the bus station where hundreds of residents as well as citizens from other towns were talked to .With branded balloons in NWASCO colours of Blue and Yellow and beautifully hanging besides tables, there was no way anyone passing through the shopping mall could have missed the presence of NWASCO. However, inside the balloons were the magic words spelling out the fabulous prizes and could only be revealed after popping a balloon for correctly answering a question. What was peculiar about this event is that all NWASCO staff participated including all support staff to build capacity.
Lusaka residents took advantage of NWASCO’s presence and registered their water and sanitation complaints which will be followed up with Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company. The media were also invited to the open day.
And speaking to the media NWASCO Director Kelvin Chitumbo who was flanked by Devolution Trust Fund (DTF) Manager Sam Go’nga and NWASO Chief Inspector Peter Mutale, reiterated NWASCO’s commitment to safe guarding consumer interests and called on consumers to look out for Service Level Guarantees (SLGs) from their respective water and sanitation provider which state exactly the level of service entitled to them.
“For the ten years that we have been in operation, we have realised the need to engage with the public more often if our services as a regulator are to be appreciated. This is the reason why we are here today to explain some of the important issues that customers and the general public need to know. It is sad that the level of knowledge on water and sanitation issues is very low and yet water is a basic need and critical to the well being of an individual.”
Mr Chitumbo expressed concern that consumers were not keen to know their water and sanitation rights as well as responsibilities. The NWASCO Director appealed to customers to demand for a good service in order to have value for their money. He further called on customers to pay for the service if water providers are to continue providing a quality service.
