SWSCO PARTNERS WITH LOCAL AUTHORITIES IN SERVICING NEW DEVELOPMENT AREAS.
In the new development areas where the Ministry of Lands or Councils have allocated land for individuals to develop, lack of coordination among stake holders has forced people to resort to onsite sanitation which may contribute to underground water contamination.
However for SWSC the story is different. The Utility has partnered with the local authority by ensuring that water and sanitation service fees are paid to the provider as a plot is purchased.
The concept of capital contribution has been successfully undertaken in Livingstone, Mazabuka and Monze.
Recent inspections undertaken by NWASCO confirmed the partnership with water and sanitation distribution lines ready for use.
The capital contribution concept should be adopted by other CUs in order to deal with the challenge of uncoordinated planning.
Southern Water and Sewerage Company (SWSC) has continued to perform relatively well in comparison with other utilities and was thus awarded the Best Performing utility for the year running 2009/2010.
Metering ratio, UFW and sanitation coverage remain the utilities’ main areas of challenge.
