ZAMBIA TO HOST WATER & SANITATION REGULATOR’S CONFERENCE
Zambia will this August 2011, host the Eastern and Southern Africa Water and Sanitation ESAWAS Regulators Association Conference under the auspices of the National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) with thetheme “Beyond Conventional Water Supply and SanitationRegulation”
The conference scheduled for the 3rd to the 5th will coincide with the NWASCO 2010/2011 Urban and Peri-Urban Sector report launch on the 5th of August 2011.
The ESAWAS Regulators Association was jointly formed in 2007 by five regulators to enhance cooperation with an aim to build effective regulation in the Sub-Saharan region.
The objectives of the Association are twofold;Capacity Building and Information Sharing and Regional Regulatory Co-operation.
The five member countries (Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Mozambique and Zambia) will attend the conference. In addition, other countries from the region which include Lesotho, Malawi Burundu, Uganda and South Africa, have also been invited to the conference.
One of the contributing factors for the formation of the Regional Association was the fact that water supply and sanitation service provision has not yet reached acceptable levels largely due to poor financial sustainability of the providers which is evidenced by low service coverage figures in Eastern and Southern African region.
