Other Water Legislation

 

The following is a summary of other legislation that have a bearing on water supply and sanitation provision:-

Water Act Chapter 198The Water Act, Chapter 198 of the Laws of Zambia mainly deals with water resources management issues in the country. This includes water resource allocation.
Environmental Protection and Pollution Control Act Chapter 204
The EPPC Act prohibits water pollution and provides for permits for discharge of waste or effluent into the environment

Public Health Act Chapter 295
This mainly deals with the prevention and suppression of diseases in the general public environment.

Local Government Act Chapter 281
The Local Government Act provides for functions of Local Authorities that include the prohibition of pollution of water courses.

Zambezi River Authority Act Chapter 467
This Act mainly deals with the management of the Zambezi River water for economic, industrial and social development with particular emphasis on water for energy purposes. This is an inter-state Act (with Zimbabwe).

Mines and Minerals Act Chapter 213
This Act provides for the protection of water resources and the minimizing of adverse effects in the environment due to mining and other related activities.

Forests Act No. 7 of 1999
The forest Act is still awaiting the publication of the commencement order. It also addresses some issues relating to water resource protection.
