Commercial Utilities
LICENSED WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION SERVICES PROVIDERS
All institutions supplying water and sanitation services to others are by law required to obtain an operating licence from NWASCO. However those supplying water for their own use are not compelled. To date a total of 29 water supply and sanitation service providers have been licensed under this Act. A provider will only be issued a licence upon payment of the determined fees in full. Providers have been classified into three categories:-commercial Utilities, local authorities and private providers.

10 Commercial Utilities
These are utilities established by Local Authorities under the Companies Act. Under this regime, the water supply and sanitation assets have been transferred to the utilities.There are currently 10 providers falling under this category. Each province has 1 Commercial Utility except for the Copperbelt province where there are 3 of such providers.

An eleventh CU is currently under formation for Luapula province.
